We visited the town of Grottaglie near Lecce to see the famous pottery made and displayed, and maybe to make some purchases. The artisans workshops and sales outlets are all clustered around the Bishops Palace. We knew they were there, but finding them was very difficult due to the Italian road signs pointing in most unhelpful directions. |

Many of the workshops appeared to be built in caves and in underground vaults which extended from the Bishops Palace. |

Each potter has his own style. Every item is thrown by hand, fired in the kiln and hand painted . |

|
Quite a lot of the pottery had a religious theme, sometimes depicting local saints.

Stacked among the dinner services, lamp stands and ornaments were ornate nativity sets. Here are the Three Kings. |

We had a very interesting meal in a Grottalgie restaurant. None of us knew what we were eating as all menus were in Italian only, the waiter could not explain and our Italian/English dictionary could not cope with the local specialities. This was typical of many restaurants in Puglia. However the food was very enjoyable. |
