Puglia Travel Report Page 2

The Itria Valley is a beautiful rural landscape with vineyards, olive groves and white-painted hilltop towns. Here the trulli houses are incorporated into farm buildings, used for storage, or more recently have been converted into luxury homes. Locorotondo is famous for its white wine while Martina Franca has magnificent baroque architecture and a cathedral with a highly ornate interior.

The main road between the little towns has great rural views. It’s a good idea to turn off into the country lanes and explore the landscape on foot.

In spring the flowers grow in profusion. June is a good time to visit as the area is quiet and temperatures do not reach the stifling heat of July and August.

Vineyards surround this trulli farm. The symbols painted on the roofs are thought to originally have had religious significance.

In the hilltop towns narrow cobbled streets lead to squares with welcome cafes.
